Stellaris expanding borders - May 18, 2016 · Every planet/solar system you control by colony will increase your borders circularly around that solar system. Same goes for outposts. For expanding, survey the surrounding, so you know whereto it makes sense to expand to.

 
My once expanding empire shrunk down to the smallest defensible core. I've been on the brink of complete ruin several times now. Now that I've finally defeated the first two, after the briefest peace where i could expand my borders, the surviving fallen empire declared war on my ally, causing me to immediately have to start fighting again..
