I just modded my switch in 18.0.0 with atmosphere 1.7 and works flawlessly. modules ,patches and homebrew apps. Games are able to launch, no crashes no lags, no reboots, surprisingly stable actually. If an install to the internal memory gives these problems then I think you're missing the latest sigpatches. Note that Hekate and Atmosphere have their own sigpatches. The ones for Hekate are in the bootloader folder and the sigpatches for Atmosphere are in the atmosphere folder.
