Skolithos

Skolithos (formerly spelled Scolithus or Skolithus) is a common trace fossil ichnogenus that is, or was originally, an approximately vertical cylindrical burrow. It is produced by a variety of organisms in shallow marine environments globally and appear as lineated features in sedimentary rocks. Skolithos.

Skolithos. An onshore-offshore replacement of the Skolithos ichnofacies (dominated by domiciles of suspension-feeders and predators) by the Cruziana ichnofacies (with abundant feeding traces of deposit-feeders) is evident. A transitional zone between both ichnofacies has been detected in the proximal lower-shoreface deposits. The degree of bioturbation ...

ABSTRACT-The trace fossil genus Skolithos Haldeman, 1840, included species, and related genera placed in synonymy, are reviewed. From among the 35 nominal species in this group, five distinctive species of Skolithos are recognized: Skolithos linearis Haldeman, S. verticalis (Hall), S. magnus Howell, S. ingens Howell, and S. annulatus (Howell).

Near the mouth of the delta (i.e., 5 km inland from the Pacific Ocean), at salinities of 12 ppt, trace diversity is comparably high, and includes modern burrows akin to Skolithos, Arenicolites, Polykladichnus, Palaeophycus, and Siphonichnus. Twenty to 40 km landward, salinity reaches only 2 ppt, but the river still experiences notable tides. An important distinction here is that although elements of the Skolithos Ichnofacies are abundant in tidal settings, many of the vertically oriented ichnofossils represent an engagement in deposit feeding rather than filter feeding (Gingras et al. 1999; Dashtgard et al. 2008). This is, again, an ethological strategy made possible by the large ...Skolithos (formerly spelled Scolithus or Skolithus) is a common trace fossil ichnogenus that is, or was originally, an approximately vertical cylindrical burrow. It is produced by a variety of organisms in shallow marine environments globally and appear as lineated features in sedimentary rocks. nearshore environments dominated by Skolithos. Ichnofabric indices are defined (Droser and Bottjer, 1986) as follows: 1) No bioturbation recorded; all original sedimentary structures. 2) Discrete, isolated trace fossils; up to 10 percent of original bedding disturbed. 3) Approximately 10 to 40 percent of original bedding disturbed. Burrows are ...Anacostia Park is located along the Anacostia River, and is where the headquarters of National Capital Parks-East is today. The specimen was collected by the park ...Forms with concentric muddy laminae indicate long-term occupation and belong to the Cruziana ichnofacies. In contrast, the behavioural style of the studied CRI, which occurs in unstable, high stress, physically controlled substrates, is comparable to the Skolithos ichnofacies in the occurrence of equilibration traces with stacked segments. From 4503 ft to the top of the core at 4470ft., the sediments are thin interbeds of burrowed to bioturbated muddy sandstone (Facies 3) and sandy mudstone (Facies 2) containing Skolithos and Terebellina . This entire interval is interpreted as mainly lower shoreface deposits, although thin transgressive shales are interpreted to be present.
